Mr. Schuch is a Licensed Professional Engineer and, prior to his retirement in March 2021, was an Assistant Professor of Medical Education at the University of Virginia, was the Director of Occupational Health and Wellness, and was the Health System's rehabilitation engineer. Throughout his career, Mr. Schuch has been actively involved in service delivery, education, and research related to assistive technology and rehabilitation engineering, with expertise related to wheelchairs, specialized seating to manage posture and prevent pressure sores, wheelchair transportation services, non-emergency medical transportation, paratransit, and wheelchair safety. Mr. Schuch has consulted with government, industry, and non-profit organizations to improve the delivery of assistive technology services and devices to individuals with disabilities. Mr. Schuch is often called upon as an expert witness in cases involving: wheelchair safety; public and private wheelchair transportation, including paratransit and demand-responsive services; wheelchair securement in vehicles; wheelchair stability and related tipover incidents; walkers and rollators; hospital beds; pressure sores; ADA concerns; and, intellectual property and patent infringement disputes.

 

As the Director of Occupational Health and Wellness, Mr. Schuch was involved in developing and delivering occupational health and wellness services throughout Virginia. He implemented surveillance programs based on OSHA requirements, NFPA standards, CDC infectious disease best practices, and more. He also implemented Lean Quality Management principles to reduce employee injuries and unsafe conditions within the University of Virginia Health System. And, Mr. Schuch significantly contributed to the development of the University of Virginia's response to COVID-19, including surveillance, contact tracing, testing, quarantine and isolation, return to work clearance, and vaccination of more than 15,000 employees.
